Dear lovely faeries,

This email contains instructions for participating in and creating heart space for this weekend's international on-line faerie heart circle. We encourage you to read this entire email, which includes important information about the unique world of on-line heart space. We strongly encourage you to join us--- we have received RSVPs from faeries around the world, including our brave fae sisters in Bangkok, who will be waking up to log in at 4AM Sunday, Thailand time. Faeries have also RSVPd from Seoul, Madrid, England, Germany, and Australia. We will be well-represented with Americans and Canadians also.

Why are we doing it? Because the heart circle is such an important tool/technology for spreading faerie consciousness. Some faeries are unable to access heart circles at in-person gatherings. We also are aware that a new generation of potential faeries is making a regular home on the internet, and we need to figure out how to engage with them. So we are doing this experiment.

This email, describing that experiment, includes four sections:

1) Logging in to the heart space
2) Creating the heart space
3) Cautions and Caveats and
4) Documenting the experience (so we can improve it even further in the future).

Please note: the password for the Radical Faerie chatroom you will enter is Yoohoo . We encourage you to print out this entire email and have it handy during the heart circle.

===============================

A word of encouragement: Though these directions may seem complicated, they are easy to learn, and your log-in process will become very easy once you have experimented a bit. So please, if you have time, play around in Stickam prior to this weekend's circle.

1) LOGGING INTO THE HEART SPACE (we encourage you to try these steps prior to the circle itself-- you can try out the chatroom directions on another existing chatroom):

a. Using Stickam as a site for heart circles: Stickam is designed to allow multiple users to join a video/audio/text conversation. When you join the Radical Faerie room, you can 1) see and hear participants in the room who are on camera or have microphones; 2) transmit your own video/audio; and 3) enter text into the text chat. If you do not have a video camera or microphone, you can still participate in the circle by typing your comments into the text box.

b. Joining Stickam: Point your brower to www.stickam.com/viewJoin.do . Sign up for a free membership. You may want to consider using your faerie name as your login name. Complete the registration process.

c. Now login to Stickam with your username and password.

d. Point your browser to the Chat Room area (listed on the menu at the top of the page): www.stickam.com/chatRoomEn.do . A list of available chat rooms will appear. Scroll through the list and find the room named "Radical Faeries". Click on the button "Enter" next to this chat room, and you will be prompted for a password. Enter: Yoohoo . Note: The Radical Faerie chatroom will be available starting at 3PM Eastern Standard Time Saturday, USA, and the circle will begin at 4PM Saturday EST. Please join the room early if you wish to try out its features prior to the beginning of the circle. We are passwording the chatroom in order to avoid the possibility of random, curious stickam members joining the room.

e. You will now be asked to click on acceptance of the Stickam rules. Click OK.

f. You will now enter the Radical Faerie heart space. The room contains three windowpanes: 1) a windowpane containing 12 boxes in which you can see participants who have cameras/microphones. 2) a windowpane for text chat and 3) a windowpane that lists all faeries who are currently in the heart space (including you).

g. Special Note for those wishing to use video/audio: In order to use the video/audio feature, you must set the Flash player to find the video camera and microphone on your computer. To do this, position your cursor over one of the twelve video boxes, and right click (Windows)/ ctrl click (Mac) to bring up the Flash options. Look for the small icons for a microphone and a video camera, and click on these to make sure that they are set corrrectly for the microphone and video camera resident on your computer. For those who need help with this, please arrive at the Radical Faerie heart space early and we will do a short tutorial on setting up cameras/microphones. If you are able to get on-line in advance to try video/audio in another chatroom we recommend this.

Once your audio/video is set up, you can click on one of the 12 available boxes and a dialogue box will pop up asking if you allow the flash player to access your video and audio. If you click "Allow", your video and/or audio will stream into the stickam system, and you will be viewable and hearable.

h. How do I choose which faeries I get to see in the video boxes? You have the ability to choose which faeries you see in the 12 video boxes. If there are more than 12 faeries with us this weekend who have video or audio, you can "dock" and "undock" faeries from the windows. To undock (remove) someone, simply click their window and look for a small "x". When you click on this "x", the faerie in that window will disappear (though you will still be able to hear them). To "dock" (add) a faerie into an empty box, click on her/his name in the list of faeries to the right, and if he/she has a camera/mic available, you will see the "dock" option when you click on their name, and simply click on "dock" to have them appear in one of the empty boxes. Note: You can only dock someone if there is an empty box for them, so you may need to undock someone if all boxes are occupied.

i. A note on lag: Since stickam will be managing audio/video/text streams from around the world, there is sometimes a lag from the time you type/speak, to the time that others are able to read/hear. Please be patient and wait for the words to arrive.

j. A note on muting: We recommend muting your microphone if you are not speaking. This both reduces noise, and reduces the amount of information that stickam must process, thus reducing lag. So please- mute your mic if you are not speaking.

k. A note on freezing: Sometimes (depending upon your internet connection) you will see the room freeze up. If this occurs, click on the "Reload" button at the top of the chatroom.

2. CREATING THE HEART SPACE

a. A note on time: Since participants will be joining us from multiple time zones, and both daylight and standard time zones, we encourage you to check to make sure that you join us at the right time. The heart space will be opened by Lady B, who is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This is Eastern Time Zone, USA. You can see the time details for Philadelphia at www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html . The heart space will open at 3PM EST Saturday, and the circle will begin at 4PM EST Saturday. If you have any questions or are unsure of your relative time, please contact us at bartlett.cd@gmail.com .

b. Grounding: We recommend that you arrive at the heart space early if possible. You should have some time to do personal grounding, become acquainted with the space, and ask questions. We welcome grounding rituals, such as burning of sage, lighting candles, chanting songs, etc. We have a huge global heart space to create, and we need you to bring all of your magic and rituals with you.

c. Being present for the Circle: It may be tempting to multitask while in the heart circle (check email, surf the web, etc.). We recommend that you take a risk of being fully present for the circle while it lasts.

d. Opening of the Circle: The Circle will open at approximately 4:05 PM EST Saturday. We will most likely follow a format that looks (approximately) like this:

1. Introduction to the Heart Space / How to participate/ What is a heart circle
2. Introductions of all circle participants (brief hello-- name, and one fun detail about yourself).
3. Announcements from the Circle
4. Grounding of the Circle
- Grounding Ritual
- Calling the Directions (we still need folks for many of the directions- contact bartlett.cd@gmail.com if you are interested).
i. North
ii. South
iii. East
iv. West
v. Center (Dirt, Bremerton, Washington State, USA).

- Reading of the Tarot Card (FireRising, Atlanta, Georgia, USA)

e. Sharing from the Heart (we will complete at least one round of the circle, and seek consensus about whether to continue after that).

f. Closing ritual

3. Cautions and Guidelines

a. The internet is a porous space, and you should expect that there is a possibility that anything you say or type could be recorded by some person or group. We want you to be aware of this reality. Given this reality, we discourage sharing of illegal activities in the Circle, but we will not (of course) censor anything that is said. Just keep in mind the realities of electronic communication in the modern era.

b. This heart circle is an important experiment. It will no doubt be gorgeously imperfect. Please keep your own notes on what you think works and doesn't work, so that you can share them with the person/s who will be documenting the circle.

c. . What is the talking stick? Faeries are used to having a physical talking stick that indicates who is sharing. Since we will not be able to pass a physical talking stick, we will make use of the list of chat participants (in the right hand windowpane) and proceed down the list both for introductions and heart sharing. When you are finished sharing, you could say "I pass the talking stick to (next person on list of faeries)."

d. Language: This weekend's circle will be facilitated in English, but we welcome faeries who speak other languages. Please speak/type the language you are most comfortable speaking.

4) Documenting the Experience: A number of us (including Cetacea from Texas, USA) will be helping to document the experience. If you have written comments, please send them to bartlett.cd@gmail.com. We are hoping to being to have regular on-line circles, and we want to make them as powerful as possible.

I think that is it for now. Please do call/email with questions. Lady B's phone is (1)-267-977-0638, AOL Chat=bartlettfree; Skype= harveymilk email= bartlett.cd@gmail.com .

Dear faeries,

Are you up for an adventure? Join us for an international on-line heart circle on Saturday, December 15/ Sunday, December 16, 2007. See below for your time zone and date. This will be a test run circle, to see how we can create heart space on the internet, which will be an increasingly crucial site of communication between humans, faerie and non-faerie, in the future.

We encourage you to bring your wisdom, your heart, and your spirit to this critical experiment in faerie community building. We will ground the circle, call the directions, read a tarot card, and dive into heart sharing. If you are interested in participating, please reply to this email, or call lady bartlett at (1) 267-977-0638, SKYPE harveymilk, with any questions.

Many faeries have already shared feedback about the potential adventures and pitfalls of creating heart space on the internet. We want you to know that we take the responsibility of creating a faerie heart circle on the internet very seriously, and we want this to be a valuable experience for each of you. Fundamentally, we think that this experiment is important because it provides access to many faeries internationally who might not otherwise be able to experience heart space. So we believe we can make it happen, and we want you to help us create the magic.

This is a SAVE THE DATE email. In the next few days, we will send out a detailed email with instructions for logging on as well as suggestions for helping create the circle. We also need help with the following elements of the circle:

1) Grounding
2) Calling the Directions
3) Reading the tarot card
4) Facilitation/ Process notetaking

If you are interested in taking on one of these roles, please email bartlett.cd@gmail.com.

We acknowledge and celebrate that this will be a marvelously imperfect attempt to create something important for future faerie communities--- so please join us with an expectation of seeing something REALLY magical.

If you are interested in participating, please send lady b an email to bartlett.cd@gmail.com so we can be sure to welcome you in advance and send you the log-in information.

It's also fine (of course) just to show up next weekend without an RSVP.
In order to prepare for the heart circle, you should secure a free account at www.stickam.com. You may want to play around in the existing chat rooms at
http://www.stickam.com/chatRoomEn.do in order to get a feel for how the rooms work. We will send out details about how to log in and join the Radical Faerie heart circle by midweek.

NOTE-- You DO NOT need a video camera or microphone on your computer to participate in the heart circle. There is also a text chat. We ask everyone to come along and visit. This is a first time experiment, mostly to get a sense of what works, how we will ground, how we will facilitate, and how we will create heart space.

We encourage you to join us in this new frontier of heart space!! The initial circle will be facilitated in English, but we encourage you to share from the heart in the language in which you are most comfortable expressing yourself.
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

Ostara Is Upon Us
Vernal Equinox: Tuesday March 20th 2007@ 8:07 pm est (-later for you all i guess )

The vernal equinox, the world is poised on the brink, suspended between the cold months and the new warmth of the growing season. The world is coming alive with green shoots and animals seeking mates. Ostara is one of the Lesser Sabbats, usually celebrated anywhere from March 19th to 21st. Some celebrated on the fixed date of March 25 (Lady Day), while others celebrate on the next full moon (a time of increased births). While the equinox is a solar holiday, Eostre is a lunar goddess. This may be viewed as symbolic of the goddess (the moon) and the god (the sun) coming together in completion. Other names by which this Sabbat may be known are Oestara, Esther, Eostre's Day, the Rite of Eostre or Rites of Spring, Alban Eilir, Festival of the Trees, and the Bacchanalia. The Christian holiday of Easter is determined as the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after the Vernal Equinox.

According to the Venerable Bede (673-735), the Anglo-Saxons called the fourth month "Esturmonath" for the goddess Eostra. Her festival became the celebration of Christ's resurrection when Anglo-Saxon and German peoples were converted to Christianity. While English and German Christians still attach the name of Eostra to their most sacred holiday (Easter or Ostern), other European languages base the name on the Hebrew word "pasah," to pass over, reflecting the Christian holiday's Biblical connection with the Jewish Passover.

All cultures living in temperate climates celebrate the coming of spring with rituals and festivals. This was one of the most important of spring festivals among pre-Christian Germanic tribes, dedicated to the goddess Ostara, a goddess associated with the "east" and thus "dawn" and "morning light." Ostara is a time to celebrate the renewal and rebirth of Nature herself, and the coming Summer. Light and darkness are in balance, as are masculine and feminine energy, yin and yang. Ostara is a fertility festival celebrating the rebirth of the God and the awakening of life from the Earth. Some Wiccan traditions worship the Green Goddess and the Lord of the Greenwood.

The Spring-cleaning tradition derived from the old witches who engaged in a cleansing each spring followed by setting up a hedge of protection. All motions involving scrubbing of stains or hand rubbing the floors should be done "clockwise." This custom aids in filling the home with good energy for growth. Another Spring tradition for ancient pagans and magicians was to dig a small trench around the outer perimeter of their home. At each quarter they would bury an egg. A modern practitioner might also add iron, old rusty nails, metal keys, old razor blades, pins and needles or witch bottles filled with the above items to diffuse magical attacks and spiritual negativity. (If you are unable to dig a perimeter, you can improvise by placing iron keys above your door, and pentacles and sigils drawn on pewter or parchment paper under your carpet or floorboards.

As a time of cleansing and renewal, Ostara is an excellent time to begin some new project. It is an excellent month for prosperity rituals or rituals that have anything to do with growth. Spells for improving communications, fertility, and abundance are especially strong at this time. Some Pagan customs include ringing bells and lighting new fires at dawn for cures, renewed life, and protection of the crops. A common belief in nineteenth century Germany touted the curative properties of water drawn early on Easter morning. One nearly universal craft is decorating hard-boiled eggs.

Eggs have long been a symbol of rebirth. They have been found among the grave goods of Anglo-Saxons, within the tombs of the Egyptians, and were placed on the fresh graves of the deceased Greeks. In ancient time, eggs were gathered for use in the creation of talismans and ritually eaten. The gathering of different colored eggs from the nests of a variety of birds has given rise to two traditions still observed today, the Easter egg hunt and coloring eggs in imitation of the various pastel colors of wild birds. Some believed that humankind was inspired by watching birds weave nests to begin weaving the first baskets. This is perhaps the origin of the association between colored Easter eggs and Easter baskets.

The custom of coloring eggs seems to be limited to the Germanic countries, Slavic countries, and America. In Scotland and Ireland, the custom is virtually unknown. Each spring in Germany, bakery windows are filled with elaborately painted eggs. Eggs are also hung from flowering branches to make "egg trees." Easter is celebrated in Germany more enthusiastically than it is anywhere else in the world with decorations up a good month before the festival. There are parties, egg hunts, and other celebrations weeks in advance of Easter itself.

In many places, it is traditional to keep Easter eggs or shells all year to ward the family and cattle against harm. They are also used specifically as a charm against hail and lightning. For this reason, great care and thought goes into the creation of egg decorations, egg-trees, boiled and decorated eggs for eating, and hare cakes.

Eostre is a goddess of the moon, an ancient measurer of time. The lunar month of 28 days gives us thirteen periods in 364 days, equivalent to the solar year. The hare, though viewed as a symbol of fertility, is also a symbol of the moon. Ixchel, the Mayan Goddess of the moon, midwifery and weaving, has a rabbit totem. Mexican panels of 600-900 AD show her giving birth to and suckling a rabbit, and another shows the rabbit representing phases of the moon.

The Egyptians called the hare Un, which means open, to open, and the opener. The month of April, the first month of the spring season, comes from the Latin “to open.” Un also means period of time. The hare as "opener" symbolizes the New Year at Easter, and fertility and the beginning of new life within the young. Since the hare can sleep with its eyes open, the Romans equated it with vigilance and believed that rabbits watched over everything. According to one story, Buddha placed the rabbit in the moon after it voluntarily gave itself as food for one of Buddha's hungry friends. In another, a rabbit jumped into a fire to feed a hungry Indra and out of gratitude, Indra placed the rabbit in the moon. Rabbits were significant totem animals however and eating them was prohibited in Britain and Egypt. A Scottish superstition suggested that eating rabbit was equivalent to eating one's grandmother.

In Asian myth, rabbits and the moon are virtually identical. The Rabbit in the Moon sweeps its surface clean with bound horsetails according to Japanese stories. The rabbit pounds rice into flour, making mochi which means both rice flour and full moon. The Sanskrit word, cacadharas also means both moon, and "that which carries the hare."

Rabbits also represent immortality and vitality. Pliny the Elder stated that rabbit meat enhanced one's beauty and radiance for a week afterwards, and Chinese myth believed rabbit meat was essential for vitality. According to Chinese myth, the rabbit is a symbol of longevity. Its fur turns white at age 100 and blue at 500. In Eastern Asian myth, rabbits created an elixir of immortality. The Algonquin trickster rabbit, Manabozho, is thought to embody all life-giving energy.

In Greece, live rabbits were popular love gifts, indicating sexual intentions. European wedded couples in the Middle Ages exchanged rabbit-shaped rings. Rabbit's popularity as a sex charm or fertility totem is related to its' natural cycle. A rabbit's gestation period is approximately one month, and it tends to be the first animal to give birth in the springtime, continuing to have litters of kits during the year. In Asian folklore, a rabbit may become pregnant simply by staring at a full moon, licking a male rabbit's fur under a full moon, or running across a moon-lit water's surface.

On Tuesday March 6, 2007 the Hawaii State House of Representatives passed HB1577 which prohibits the outdoor planting and outdoor field trials of GMO coffee in the state of Hawaii. It allows for research in an environmentally controlled facility. HB1577 previously passed both the Energy and Environmental Protection Committee, chaired by Hermina Morita and Consumer Protection and Commerce Committee, chaired by Robert Herkes. The vote on the House floor was 45 ayes and 4 nos with 2 excused. This comes on the tails of the historic vote last month in the Hawaii Senate passing SB 958 a ten-year ban on the planting and research on taro, the Native Hawaiian staple crop and the revered ancestor of the Hawaiian people. The first gmo crop moratorium to pass a body of the Hawaii State Legislature

The coffee bill HB1577 is a reasonable, fair and prudent bill, which will help to protect the vibrant Hawaii coffee industry from the contamination that other crops in the U.S. have been affected with. Says Una Greenaway, from the Coaliton to Protect Hawaii Coffee and an organic Kona coffee farmer. "We applaud the foresight of the Hawaii State Representatives to behave in a proactive manner to control the risks that could devastate an industry's markets. The coffee industry in Hawaii, is a 175 year old industry. There are over 600 small family farms in Kona alone that could be affected. We say mahalo to the legislature."

The bill crosses over to the Senate next week, where the dialogue continues.

ISLANDS AT RISK: GENETIC ENGINEERING IN HAWAI'I
New video now available for activists and house parties
January 2007

Contact:
Brian Smith, 510-550-6714

Honolulu, HI - Earthjustice announces a new video entitled Islands at Risk – Genetic Engineering in Hawai'i. This half-hour program explores a subject that has received little attention in the media but involves a potential public health and safety issue of enormous consequence.

Focusing on local experiments with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the program features local Hawai'i farmers, teachers, legal and medical experts, and community activists who share their perspective on the genetic engineering of crops and the patenting of life forms.

"Hawai`i has been called the GMO testing capitol of the world because, in the past ten years or so, we have had here more than 2,000 field tests of experimental genetically-engineered crops in more than 6,000 locations around our small state," says Earthjustice attorney Paul Achitoff in the video. "And this is more than any other place in the world."

Earthjustice has won recent lawsuits in federal and state courts challenging the introduction of these experimental crop tests in the islands without first assessing the environmental and human health impacts.

Islands at Risk – Genetic Engineering in Hawai'i looks at some of the possible impacts, including allergic and immune system responses from exposure to biopharmaceutical crops - both in humans and in Hawai'i's endangered species - and contamination of regular food crops such as papaya, taro, coffee and corn with genetically modified versions of those crops.

"Some people say it's a tiny risk," says Kaua'i taro farmer Chris Kobayashi in the video, "but it's a huge risk."

Some of that risk is described by medical doctor, public health officer and World Health Organization consultant Dr. Lorrin Pang of Maui who calls for more oversight of the genetic engineering industry. Regarding the substances introduced into the cells of GMO plants, Pang states, "These things are not benign. These things are quite unknown. The kinds of studies we do for drugs and vaccines are exactly what genetically-engineered food needs."

Aside from health issues, the video focuses on the economics of the current state government policy of subsidizing the biotech industry. Local organic farmers growing coffee, papaya, taro and corn point out that genetically engineered produce does not command the export market prices of conventionally-grown and organic produce. Many countries either refuse to import GE food or require labeling. "We're going in the wrong direction for economic development," says international legal expert Mililani Trask. "We need to re-assess it."

Trask also discusses the practice of patenting Hawaiian life forms, calling it a form of bio-piracy. "We Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are claiming our inalienable right to the biodiversity of our lands. This is the heart of what we are in terms of our survival, our ability to maintain our health."

The recent attempt by the University of Hawai'i to patent taro, honored as an ancestor of the Hawaiian people, is recounted in the video by Moloka'i hunter and Hawaiian activist Walter Ritte. His and others' successful efforts to persuade the UH to drop their patents on new hybrid Hawaiian taro varieties was a signal to the whole biotechnology industry, Ritte says in the video, that "you cannot own our ancestors."

The issue of food security and the world's future ability to feed itself is discussed by local farmers Una Greenaway and Nancy Redfeather.

"By choosing the path of genetically-engineered agriculture, we are narrowing significantly the amount of seed varieties that are available to the farmer today," says Redfeather.

The video ends with a vision of Hawai'i as a model for sustainable tropical agriculture. "Hawai'i is a niche specialty market for amazing things: coffee, pineapple, banana, flowers. We can actually support ourselves with this," says mixed organic farmer Melanie Bondera.

The program was produced for Earthjustice by Joan Lander and Puhipau of the documentary production team Na Maka o ka 'Aina. Copies are available at http://www.namaka.com

Congress Votes 368-31 to Back Mumia’s Racist Frame-up

By Steven Argue

On December 6th Congress voted 368 to 31 to back the racist frame-up of Mumia Abu Jamal by condemning the decision of the French city of St. Denis to name a street after the innocent death row inmate. This anti-Mumia resolution, HR 1082 (also called HR 407), asks the French government to intervene against the city.

Voting against the resolution were members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Congressperson Robert Scott. He argued that the case was still being decided in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and that it was inappropriate for Congress to take a position.

In reality Mumia’s case is such a blatant and outrageous frame-up that it should be considered the responsibility of Congress to intervene on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal in particular and against the racist death penalty in general. Yet under the current racist government of Democrats and Republicans Robert Scott is correct in opposing Congress’s intervention. As Pam Africa, chair of the International Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, has pointed out, “the House action is designed to weigh in on and promote an atmosphere in the U.S. judiciary that is prejudicial to Mumia's receiving any form of justice today.”

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals will be hearing arguments in January. This is Mumia’s final appeal. It will decide if Mumia is set free, given a new trial, held in prison for life, or executed.

The resolution falsely claims, “Mumia Abu-Jamal stood over Officer Faulkner and shot him in the face, mortally wounding him…” Yet this is not what the eyewitnesses said. For instance William Singletary says, "Mumia Abu-Jamal didn't shoot Daniel Faulkner. The passenger in the right-hand side of the Volkswagen [that Faulkner had stopped] got out of the car and shot him. When Mumia came on the scene, we [Singletary and another man] were on the police radio trying to radio for help." ("Witness: Abu-Jamal didn't do it" Philadelphia Daily News Dec. 8, 2006)

Hawaii’s Neil Abercrombie stood up to this resolution for legal lynching. Ed Case didn’t vote.

Nationally, among those voting for the anti-Mumia resolution was Democrat House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi. She has also announced that she and the other Democrats will continue funding the war in Iraq. In voting against Mumia Abu-Jamal Nancy Pelosi has voted for the death of an actual anti-war and anti-racist leader of the people, while her career has been firmly planted atop the corpses of over 650,000 dead Iraqis and her continuation of the slaughter.

It is outrageous that that the Democrat party would vote in its House majority to condemn a French city for daring to make an issue of a racist legal lynching, while doing nothing about the liar and killer, Bush. But then again that should be no surprise either since the Democrat Party voted in its majority for the war in Iraq.

The Democrat Party was also involved in the frame-up of Mumia Abu-Jamal from the beginning. Democrat Ed Rendell was the Philadelphia district attorney that successfully worked to frame Mumia Abu-Jamal in 1982. Later, with a lynch mob attitude created by the lies of the corporate press, he successfully ran for mayor of Philadelphia on a platform that included promoting the murder of Mumia Abu-Jamal. He was Mayor from 1992-1999. Bill Clinton then helped get him the position of chair of the National Democratic Committee. Since 2003 he has been the Governor of Pennsylvania. In addition Ed Rendell is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police that is calling for Mumia’s blood while his wife is an appellate judge on the Third Circuit US Court of Appeals that is going to hear Mumia's appeal. Besides framing Mumia, Rendell also presided over the police bombing of the MOVE home in Philadelphia in 1984, resulting in 11 deaths and 65 homes destroyed.

California representative Sam Farr [D] was among the eight that voted “Present”, choosing not to vote for or against the resolution. This despite Sam Farr sending this author a letter promising to back the Congressional Black Caucus’s position, that having been a position in support of framed political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. Sam Farr also sent a copy of a letter that he sent to the Congressional Black Caucus with the same promise. These promises, as it turns out, were nothing but lies.

This vote by the racist US Congress was also an affront to the people of St. Denis that have chosen to support and honor Mumia. Would Sam Farr stand aside in a similar way if a resolution came before him that called for action against his constituents in the City of Santa Cruz, where the city has also passed resolutions in favor of Mumia Abu-Jamal?

Mumia is innocent, and much of the world knows it.

Here is the response the City of St. Denis had to earlier attempts to coerce them into ending their support for Mumia Abu-Jamal:

“The city hall of Saint Denis denounces the manipulations of certain ultra-conservative pressure groups, and reasserts its commitment in favor of Mumia Abu-Jamal

“The city hall of Saint Denis re-affirms yet again its support to the women and men who are demanding Mumia Abu-Jamal be treated with fairness and justice. The picket this 30th day of November 2006 has been organized to protest against the pressure brought to bear on the city of Saint Denis by members of the American extreme right in order to bring about the cancellation of our decision to name one of our streets after an African American militant who has been unfairly incarcerated and sentenced to the death penalty.

“This ultra conservative pressure group, based in Philadelphia, has not hesitated to make use of the grossest manipulations. Thus, the widely disseminated information according to which the city of Philadelphia is suing the cities of Saint Denis and Paris, because of their commitment in favor of Mumia Abu-Jamal - is nothing but a lie. The Mayor of Philadelphia, as well as the president of its city council, informed the city of Saint Denis that they never intended to file any kind of suit, and have absolutely nothing to do with this campaign.

“This manipulation was unmasked, and it should be know that the Philadelphia politician who initiated it, though a member of George Bush's party, was defeated during the recent American elections.

“Whatever the case may be, the city hall of Saint Denis is proud to have named a street of this city in honor of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who has become one of the symbols, of the struggle for justice and the abolition of the death penalty in the US and throughout the world.

“It is not the first time that an international mobilization has taken place in favor of American citizens who are unfairly sentenced in their own country. Such was the case for Nicola Sacco, and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, between 1920 and 1927, for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who died on the electric chair in 1953, and subsequently in 1972 for Angela Davis initially sentenced [sic, she was actually never sentenced] for murder, before being acquitted of all charges.

“The city hall of Saint Denis will steadfastly pursue the struggle to save Mumia Abu-Jamal, so that this man incarcerated for a quarter of a century for a crime he has always claimed he did not commit - be reinstated in his human rights.

“Saint Denis 30th of November 2006”

The people of the world should not forget this hypocritical act of the US Congress, a governing body of a nation that falsely claims to uphold the values of human rights on a world scale. Likewise this once again exposes the need for the American people to build a socialist alternative to racist and repressive Democrat and Republican Parties.

As Mumia Abu-Jamal says, “Conventional wisdom would have one believe that it is insane to resist this, the mightiest of empires. But what history really shows is that today's empire is tomorrow's ashes, that nothing lasts forever, and that to not resist is to acquiesce in your own oppression. The greatest form of sanity that anyone can exercise is to resist that force that is trying to repress, oppress, and fight down the human spirit...”

Mumia stands up for unions, against war, against racism, equality for gays and lesbians, for the poor, and against the many injustices of the so-called criminal justice system. Mumia speaks up on many of the issues ignored, lied about, or glossed over by the corporate media and the corporate politicians. We need Mumia, yes we need him alive, but we also need him free. Yet all of the evidence shows that Mumia won't get justice in America unless we turn up the heat.
I could contribute to food, or just give you some money and you use it how ever you want.

I was wondering if anyone was going to be staying on into October, or what local faeries there are. I would love to meet and spend time with other Hawaii faes. Also looking for tips on what to do, what not to do, etc.
Original Message --
From: Horned01@aol.com

In several of the discussions this past year I heard some wonderful thoughts coming from those who joined the tribe who are not of the "faerie classic" type. In listening to their words, I had an idea that I would like to do a special edition of the Airy Faerie that features stories, poetry, art and thoughts that represent the female side of the modern faerie community (and in this case, I'm not limiting the word female to bio-female - this does include the
transgendered that share that identity).

In the grand debates, I often feel that this perspective is often overpowered by the numbers of male voices that speak up and thought it would be nice to take a pause in my own talking in the Airy Faerie to give this group a chance to speak up and be heard. It would be my hope that someone would like to take up the challenge to make this idea an on-going expression of this collective perspective.

If you have something to share, please send it my way: Horned01@aol.com
If you are an artist but don't have a way to electronically send your creation to me, contact me directly and we can discuss possibilities. I don't have a specific deadline in mind. Once I collect enough to support a 12-16 page issue, then I'll start putting it together.

Aloha Loved Ones
Here is My Hawaiian Radical Faerie Sanctuary download
My experience here on the island are as follows
This is a VERY Magickal place...we have all four elements combining in very elemental ways...the Lava(fire) flows down the crater's side into the ocean(water) making steam(air) and poof instant new earth!!! The island is growing each moment, primordial...and NEW. I am seeing and feeling a place where we as humans can learn from our past mistakes and CHANGE the story. The energy here, especially the fire has brought me on a journey to my CORE...the source of my physical body, many things keep peeling away like an onion. My past programs, past agendas, past pains, and past Magicks and intentions are all coming into my consciousness, ready to be discarded or embraced. It seems to me that this island really is bringing me to the power of NOW. It is very important to be present here, yes there is no animals or many natural poisons here to maim and hurt (ok definitely beware of centipedes!) but there are many things that can hurt if not present...a fall on the hard lava earth can cut maim and scar...the ocean here can take you off to sea...if not present....and if not present with the native folk..trouble can ensue as well...and it can rain for Months....the highlights have been...some VERY beautiful people of ALL races genders and sexuality's...unifying and creating communities on many different levels...BEAUTIFUL land...the importance of Ohanna (family) is very clear here (all different kinds of family) the Aina (potent earth energy is very strong) air is clear..we have jungle, desert, mountain, beach..all here...lots of gentle and welcoming Aloha as well as the shadow side.
I have seen vision of the radical faeries bridging shadow and light...ancient and new..here with our presence...and the idea of caregiving the steam vents is a powerful and lovely idea....steam vents are where steam comes from lava tubes.. a cave and four or five other spots that you can get naked and climb into and sweat and cleanse...this is a sacred and power-full spot...the cave is like climbing back into PELE"S womb...imagine the healing...and this has become the main cruising spot on this side of the island..a place to play and fuck....now of course this has caused a bit of a rift..as we have seen in most of the cruise parks in this country, a sacred place were families an women come to heal as well and find men always having sex, shitty kleenex and used condoms litter the ground (were is the respect faggots?)...so some good in-between energy and CARE givership would definitely be an asset and....
What i see here is that almost all agenda that has come to this island has had DISASTROUS effect/affect...no presence with what is here NOW!! The agenda's do not come from the raw Here and Now....but from mainland where the reality grid is much different than here...some of the disastrous effects have been agricultural, religious (churches and clothes and plants with thorns to keep the natives in clothes and shoes)/spiritual...tourism (what a mess!) social (rifts between Hawaiians and Haulies(whites)) the list goes on...
Now many people from all over the planet are being drawn here...to play out or create new story?..who knows but I definitely want New story..
I do not resonate with the idea of creating a sanctuary here from afar. I highly encourage all that really feel the vision to come to the island and and feel her...go on your journey of self and your relationship with the island and all of her natives..and visualize in the here and Now of what we as Two spirits need to create here...doing it from afar does NOT resonate at all with me...there are many faerie places here..many communities to plug into, and support us... while we fully realize the vision
as for board of directors...i feel BORED WITH DIRECTORS...this is my movie too witch...so once again i encourage you to come here...fully realize the MOVIE...and lets do what we as faeries do best...but circle up and ALL direct the movement from the here and now
Much healing and remembrance is here(not all easy) and I feel greatly about having faerie tribe here Truly representing....i do highly recommend CAUTION..PRESENCE, and the release of OLD AGENDA'S
I am not attached to any outcome...and this is my download
So much love and aloha to all..i do truly love and adore you and look forward to playing and praying with you all again soon
p.s. as for the noni on the butt-hole ritual..i have seen the healing and ecstasies that come from this...and i am NOT all about the noni...i much prefer the Kukui nut oil...feels SOO good!!!!!!!
LOVE IN YOU
K-Hisses
I've been here for 4 months and am astonished at our invisibility. The traditional gay community is at best, a sad commentary on blending into the mainstream. We are better than that - we are unique and have been given many gifts including the responsibility of honoring our inherent magic and spirituality.
> out of curiosity, how long have you and yours
> been together?

We met when we were 17 & 18 at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, went home together the first night, and have now been together for 20 years.

> have any tips?

Arguments happen, everybody is crazy in their own way, you hurt most the ones you love, its better to work things out than to be alone and have to start life over again with somebody new.

> and how is life on the big island?

We have no idea yet, we have never been to Hawai'i before. We plan on being there by March. We are giving ALL our posesions to our Son and his Husband and ariving in Hawai'i with just a few clothes.

> my partner and i will be visiting hawaii shortly
> and intend to relocate next year...

A visit would be nice, but we don't need it. We have each other, so it matters not what else we have. NOTHING is as important as 'Us', and we are moving to Hawai'i for 'Us'.
